Featuring a wildly infectious bassline anchoring another beautifully vulnerable vocal from Anna, this track continues to showcase the hallmarks of forthcoming album Luck/Time: carefully crafted songs and astute production from one of New Zealand’s most talented vocalists.

Layers of tactful guitar from Anna combine with a call-and-response chorus to create an instant earworm of a track. The track stems entirely from “a bassline and a desire to capture a certain feeling/groove in the music”, and shows another side to Anna Coddington: “slinky and relaxed, and a little bit creepy”.

The single arrives alongside a video again directed by long-time collaborators Aidee Walker and Humans. Starring Anna herself, along with a cameo from her son, and featuring a selection of her own stuff the video serves as a representation of Anna’s music making process – “I just go into the studio, grab whatever is up there, make noise with it, arrange it till it sounds good, and stack up those brightly coloured Pro Tools waveforms”. Colourful, melodramatic and instantly memorable, the video is the perfect accompaniment to ‘Apples’.

Anna Coddington releases new single ‘Lantern’, her second for 2016, and one which continues the journey towards album number three. Mixed by Djeisan Suskov (Leisure), ‘Lantern’ features a soaring chorus combining with delicate guitars and a talented songwriter at her most vulnerable, and follows on from the impressive tone set by earlier single ‘Release Me’.

Released alongside an accompanying lyric video entirely created by Coddington herself, ‘Lantern’ again sees Coddington laying herself bare lyrically, questioning her place in the world. Pieced together around the theme of uncertainty,‘Lantern’ once again showcases one of New Zealand’s most acclaimed songwriters and her incredible vocal range, floating between vulnerable verses and powerful choruses.

Anna Coddington unleashes new single ‘Release Me’, her first new material for 2016. The yacht-rock inspired ‘Release Me’ features the incredible rhythm section of Chris O’Connor and Mike Hall, alongside keys from Steph Brown (LIPS) and guitar from Jeremy Toy (She’s So Rad).

Here we see Coddington lyrically at her best; doubtful and uncertain lyrics are given life through her amazing vocal talent and sung with aaaall of the feelings. ‘Release Me’ continues the build towards the release of Anna Coddington’s highly anticipated third album, out later this year.

The music video shows a cast all in need of release, with director Aidee Walker literally driving us through peoples’ emotions across Auckland city. Watch it below.
